Procedure Overview

At Blueridge OMS we specialize in the management and treatment of:

  • Lingual Nerve injury (usually presenting with a numb tongue).
  • Inferior Alveolar Nerve injury (usually presenting as a numb lip and gums).
  • Mental Nerve (usually presenting as a numb lip).

During the consultation appointment sensory testing is completed to determine the level of altered sensation. Patients return for follow up appointments to monitor progression and resolution. If there is a surgical indication for repair, necessary imaging and planning is completed.

The most common reason for surgical intervention and repair of a nerve is when there is evidence of a “nerve scar” or neuroma. Neuromas form when there is a physical injury to the nerve itself. The injury can be mechanical, thermal, or chemical in nature.

Surgeries are usually completed in the hospital setting using a microscope. The nerve and neuroma are visualized and in most cases the neuroma can be removed, and the nerve can be reconnected with the assistance of a special synthetic channel. Most patients go home the same day.

At Blueridge OMS we take pride in providing the best care possible.Your safety, privacy and comfort are of the utmost importance.
